Walking
|
| | Walking is the least expensive mode of transportation, yet it's also the most beneficial: - Walking is good exercise –it's good for your heart, bones, joints, muscles & overall health.
- Its repetitive motion calms the body and eases stress.
- It can help to combat America's obesity epidemic.
- It helps build community (a simple wave as you walk by a neighbor strengthens community connections).
- It reduces traffic congestion and pollution.
- It's FREE!
Many of the trips that we make every day are short enough to be accomplished on foot or even via wheelchair. The 1995 National Personal Transportation Survey (NPTS) found that approximately 40% of all trips are less than 2 miles in length, which represents only a 30-minute walk – the minimum amount of daily exercise doctors say we need. Almost 14% of trips are less than 1/2 a mile, which can be walked in 8 minutes or less. | |
