Walking Bus
Walk to School with the Bus
How Does It Work?
Start a Walking Bus
|
| | The Walking Bus is just like a normal bus -- but everyone is on foot! It takes the same route to school and back every day, it has an adult "driver" and "conductor" who walk at the front and back of the bus, and it picks up the kids along the way at regular stops.
Great for Kids! For kids, the Walking Bus is great. They get exercise and fresh air, see interesting things along the way, and have fun with their friends even before their school day starts.
Great for Parents! Parents appreciate knowing that their kids can get to school and back home again safely and on time. They also welcome the opportunity for their children to learn pedestrian safety skills and cooperation. And parents love not having to join the school ratrace in their cars each day!
Great for the Community! The Walking Bus is also great for the community, because it means fewer cars on the road at peak school drop-off and pick-up hours, which helps to lower traffic congestion, driver frustration and air pollution.
|
| | A Walking Bus usually has a minimum of 5-6 children with at least one adult per 6 children.
The Walking Bus can be organized informally with a group of parents, or the parents can propose that a more formal system be run through the school or district.
Either way, the route, stops and timing need to be clear to all participants. Both children and adult volunteers need to be registered and a volunteer rota agreed. A backup plan needs to be made, so that volunteers have a backup to phone in case of illness or emergency.
