Car Pooling Reduces Congestion    Park & Ride    Butte County Rideshare Opportunities    Driving Alone is Expensive

Car Pooling Reduces CongestionTop of Page

Car pooling helps reduce driving and parking congestion dramatically. Even sharing with just one other person would reduce the number of cars on the road significantly.

In addition to benefiting the community, car pooling has many personal benefits as well. You save money in gasoline, parking fees and vehicle wear and tear. When you're not driving, you can use the extra time to relax, read, pay bills, catch up on work or socialize with friends and colleagues. The frustration of commuting alone in congested traffic is reduced when you share a ride with others.

Park-and-Ride lots provide a central meeting place adjacent to major travel routes where commuters can meet to form carpools or catch buses for the remainder of the commute trip and leave their cars parked for free.

Caltrans presently operates two Park-and-Ride lots in Butte County, with a total of 154 paved spaces available. The largest lot, located at the intersection of SR 99 and SR 32 in Chico, has 124 parking spaces and 16 bike lockers. A bus stop, located on Fir Street, serves two Butte County Transit routes and one Chico Area Transit System route.

The other Park-and-Ride is located at the intersection of Nelson Avenue and SR 70 in Oroville and has 30 spaces.

The City of Oroville also developed an additional Park-and-Ride facility at the corner of Montgomery and Oak Streets, with space for 34 vehicles. In addition, the Town of Paradise opened a Park-and-Ride lot at 6231 Skyway in August 1999. The lot has space for 36 vehicles.
