Encourage Alternatives
Get Creative
|
| | Encouraging your staff to use alternative transportation is often a combination of promoting the idea and acknowledging the participants.
Ideas include: - Start a program encouraging employees to walk, cycle or take public transportation all or part of the way to work, using a website to enter and track daily distance traveled. Support it with e-mail reminders and posters.
- Start a Yellow Bike fleet, to provide loaner bikes to employees and customers. Those who walk, carpool or take the bus and even those who continue to drive can bike to lunch or errands during the day.
- Devise prizes and/or publicity for those who take alternative transportation.
- Provide secure bike parking or bike racks.
- Put up a Rideshare board, to encourage employee carpooling.
- Provide preferential parking for carpoolers.
- Send out a shuttle to pick up carpoolers from remote parking.
- Publicize the benefits to employees: reduced vehicle operating costs, reduced air pollution, increased health and fitness, reduced commuting trauma.
